TRACTORS in SPACE and
THE STARRY OLD ONE in TIME

One day I was discing the big field.
The sod heavy with the aroma the soil gives.
It was hot and it seemed like a very long row.
The crows were between the rows eating bugs.
Coyote was looking for mice.
I guess I began dreaming with the noise of the tractor motor.
I was thinking about my tractor and my mind was floating.
I was anywhere, even on another planet doing the
same thing I was doing here.
I hoped we would have good shovels when we go.

The old man's dad and him blew the stumps with dynamite
and made the land farmable. They were Swedes.
Before that an English man cut the trees and made
the plat. In time I was the old one.
So the three of us have worked the land for 100 years.
Two of us died
One day my sons will be old and they will have the land.
Who knows?
There was some wisdom in the old one.
He said this place will be here long after you're dead.
It's all in the stars.
There is nothing to worry about.

FROM TIME TO TIME THE SALAMANDER
OF LEGEND AND MYTH SPEAKS HERE!

It was a great day. There was a worm moving toward me.
All of a sudden I heard a bang, grinding, boring noise
coming toward me! I was going up and up toward the
light of the top of the world. No! I was on the back
of a tractor auger.
I was looking right in the eyes of two giants. They
picked me off from the auger. One held me and the other
did too. They did not hurt me. They took me to the woods
and put me there.
They made noise with the big hole near their eyes.
All I could understand was the words 'sacred'and self-regenerative like me.
When they were leaving, one said the word 'genes.' The other said 'immortality and regeneration' like me.
What a day I had! Make a note: have to dig deeper.
SEEDING THE EARTH 2013

MAY 3 was the day to start. This year there is about seven acres to do. It ended on May 11.
The tractor had been tilling with the rotovator. They work well with each other. It would take sixteen hours to get the soil ready. The soil was dry, blowing this way and that. My eyes and clothes took the ulta-fine soil poorly.
For seven days, the temperature was eighty-five degrees. Global warming did that. Spring in this area normally is sixty-two degrees in May.
The seed must go in. Each bag is fifty-five pounds. There were eight bags. There was buckwheat, oats, clover, timothy, and rye, in different fields.
Now is the time is to spread the seed by hand-spreader. The four hundred-forty pounds passes through the spreader by walking the seed.
The process makes aches and pains. A four hundred pound roller is attached to the tractor, packing the seed in the soil, causing more ultra-fine soil in the eyes and clothes. It takes about 12 gallons of gasoline to do the job.
Now the old one is glad it is done. All he wants is May showers and a few days rest.

HAYING 2013
The cut comes during late July and August. The seeding went ok as well. There was big water during June and early July. There was 6" of water leaving depressions holding water, and killing some seed. Total kill was mediated by a great take. I still will have to till again next spring.
There was ample for cutting, raking, and drying. There were no big breakdowns. The job went steady. Timothy was shoulder high, and the clover was so thick it would clog the sickle bar. All in all, it was a good year. The ground absorbed the water, and acted like it was sub-irrigating until September.

APPLE TIME
The crop of apples and pears was astounding! The apples were over flowing in the shed! Another shed was used to keep more apples between 42 and 38 degrees. The culls went to the deer, who come around about this time of year.
The orchard has Braeburns, Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Fuji, Gala, Jonareds, Spartans, green and red Anjou, Bartlett, Bosc, Red Pear, Asian Pears, San Jose Plums, President Plums, and Prune Plums. Picking starts in the middle of September for summer types, and ends after the first frosts. The biggest surprise this year was the red and green Anjou pears: they were huge! Good eating!

OLD MAN'S BACK
It seems the old man is old. His back has been aching since the accident at the hay barn. It was 2005 in spring, early in the morning: he went out to side the barn with 17' 1/2" pine slabs that were salvaged from the mill. They were wet. The project needed to be done. There was no one to help. He pushed the slabs up the ladder anyway. He lost his balance, and tore his right set of back muscles. He could hear them tear. They still flare up.
The next one was a slip off the back steps on his left hip and leg. That was in 2008. It was wet steps that got him. Next was a slip on leaves, landing on the low back: that was in 2010. Next the fall on the cement step landing on the low back, attributed to moss: that was 2012. We tried to tell him to retire, but as of today, he is still farming.

SKYE THE FAWN
One day Skye turned up lame in the yard. He was favoring his right front leg. His mother was worried. Fawns have to be healthy for winter, and it was already August. His mother made the fawn stay still in the Reed Canary grass by staying right by him. Soon he was walking ok, and began zigging and zagging like before. Thanks to mom, Skye has a chance to be a big buck someday.

THE DEER THAT TALK
It doesn't take long to realize that the deer are very smart. If you are so lucky as to have deer pass by, stop and inquire of them. After a while, you might be a friend, and give them some apples. Soon you may be amazed how friendly they are. Remind yourself to carry several more apples. If you're without apples, they will bow, then raise their heads to ask, "Where is my apple?" Now it's very hard to explain if you don't have an apple for them when you look in their big bright eyes. Note: consider carrying carrots.

SOMETIMES THINGS GO WRONG

It started on the 7th of Feb,2014 at 4a.m. in the morning. In the dark, I felt my way to the bathroom. As soon as I turned on the faucet, there was no water. The electric was o.k. The water system had burst. I had some water to drink stored away. So much for indoor plumbing. The thermometer read 10F below zero.
The next morning, I set a fire, and went down to cut a hole in the frozen river. Then I started to walk with a pail to the cabin, 300 ft. away. There was 2 1/2 ' of snow on the ground. My friends, the deer, had left long ago. Squirrely is in his dens(yes dens). Most things slowed down. Shoveling snow was something to do.
I phoned a friend. He had gallon size milk containers empty: so did I. In all, there were 31 of 'em we filled.
The water came from a creek, high in the mountains. So it goes for now.
It was good to have a well built outhouse. By the time that March came around, there was 3' of snow on the ground. The snowshoes were handy too. March was still frozen. By April, it thawed by the 15th. Then the digging began to redo the water system. I was behind on all chores, even pruning.
Water came May 8th,2014. June was a hectic time. There was no time to seed. Fall is ok for that too. With all of the goings on, one of the does had twins. The little ones are very very beautiful. Well we might make it after all this year, but we still have a long way to go: we have yet to start haying. No one minds: everything will be all right.

HAYING 2014 ----- WATER FROM THE SKY

It was August 14th. The rain was steady this morning. It was the first since June 1st.
Haying was started July 19th and ended the 25th. The temperature was 100 degrees most all of the time. I can still hear the machinery today. I remember the first day when a patch of hay was cut. A doe came out from the thicket when it was done. Her place was violated. She turned and went home. The seeding done last year made a difference. We had a record number of bales: 714. The hay dried just right. We bucked and put it up on the pickups.
But today the sound of the rain, the patter on the leaves of the hazelnut trees and the thicket, and it's quiet again.
It just feels like fall. There's winter wood to gather and the fruit of the orchard. It all goes so fast.

From the Old One

WINTER WOOD 2014

We start getting wood in August. We go into the high mountains looking for blown down trees. Sometimes we cut standing dead trees. You have to have sharp eyes to spot the wood in the forest. Shadows make it hard.
The wood is bucked into sixteen inch or eighteen inch billets. It is lots of work to carry the wood to the truck. Sometimes we have to carry the wood 100' to 200' to the truck. In that part it's easy to twist an ankle.
You've got to have good safety glasses, gloves, earplugs and an air horn to scare off bears. And don't forget your hardhat! You need good chain saws,a six pound maul, rat tail files for sharpening the saws(check the one you need to use), and gas and oil for the saws. When you're deep in the bush, an extra chain saw is a good idea.
It takes four cords to fill the woodshed, and that has to last from Oct. through April. During a mild winter there is some left over.
We wood until the first snow. Once you split the wood and carry it to the stove, you're in heaven.

SALAMANDER December 5th, 2014

Salamander was awakened by Orion. The rocket was thunder to him. Wakened, he wants to talk. The day had come for the two-legs to go to Mars, their new home. All the animals must go to bring the ancient template for all life. I see the trees walking with seeds.
Orion went two times around the world. There will be thousands of ships and the two-legs. There will be every kind of life, and two planets: Earth and Mars, then more planets, millions. Tell and see the great Creator The Way, and The Truth will be seen.
Two by two, again and again, forever to the stars and
planets, in kindness.

SALAMANDER speaks from time to time.

2015 Haying------the year of Global Warming

Warming, up is down, down is up. In June, the cut was early. Yes, there were more bales,780, but we were working in 102 degree temperature, two years in a row.
As early as August the 30th, the black bears were hanging around the orchard. They stayed until today, October 11th. They won't leave! I've been trying to protect the orchard at night during September and October. The airhorn scares them off, but they come back. They try to climb the fence or dig underneath. They're after what little fruit is left on the ground after picking. They came up on the front porch and pushed against the door. They tried to get into the fruit storage, which has two strong locks on it.
The drought means they aren't hibernating normally, and who knows what will happen! There might not be much snow or rain this winter. The river has been half as full all this year. God save all of us.

SALAMANDER says, save the planet, PLEASE!

2016 - ORCHARD

Black bears all over the orchard. They came August 11 when I was picking fruit. The biggest one I've ever seen, about 300 pounds, was a grandpa with white whiskers. He came into the yard when I was in the fruit storage shed. He looked at me. I looked at him, about 35' between us. I had some fruit in my hand, and I walked quickly into the house, and he ambled off in another direction, not to be seen again this fall. A few minutes later, there was a smaller bear, right behind grandpa, about 150 pounds. It seemed grandpa was dropping him off for a meal in the orchard, and I scared him away.
A couple of days later, I was working on my chainsaw, and as I looked up, there was 200 pounder coming toward me in the yard. He was kind of shocked to see me, and headed along the fence by the orchard, and left.
In the meantime, I was working hard to pick the remaining fruit. This was very early to see bears. I believe their natural circadian rhythm is speeded up because of the warming climate, so they want to fatten up for winter earlier.
In early September, although most of the fruit was picked, they got past the electric fence by digging under it. They were looking for pears, but only found small ones left, so they began to climb the trees and tear them apart looking for more.
The local paper said there were more bears making trouble than anyone could remember, although only 4 were trouble bears and had to be relocated. One had to be shot. A small village north of here had a large grizzly wandering around who wouldn't leave. A neighbor got in trouble for shooting at it. People were warned that a bear up your tree wasn't going to get any response from the authorities, and to keep children and pets inside.
I decided with a heavy heart, after growing my trees for 25 years, I had to cut down most of them: all of the pears, because that was drawing the bears, but I saved enough apple trees for my own use and to feed the deer.

SALAMANDER says, it's bare all over the orchard. Save the planet,PLEASE!
